Catholic Charities Immigration Legal Services will be training attorneys on U Nonimmigrant Status for Immigrant Victims of Serious Crimes on Wednesday, February 20. Presenting the training will be several experienced members of the staff of Catholic Charities Immigration Legal Services.
Please note that while the morning content is introductory, the afternoon content is intended both for practitioners new to immigration law as well as those looking to sharpen their U visa skill set and will include time for questions/discussion. A tentative agenda is attached.
Practitioners who complete this training are potentially eligible to represent a pre-screened Catholic Charities client and his or her family members pro bono, with technical supervision from Catholic Charities.
We are in the process of applying for 6 CLE credits, including Access to Justice credits.

On Monday, October 29 and Tuesday, October 30 in Portland, join the Catholic Legal Immigration Network, Inc. (CLINIC) in partnership with Catholic Charities’ Center for Immigration Defense, for a two-day Introduction to Removal Defense course which will include basics of asylum law, withholding, CAT, bond proceedings, removal proceedings and cancellation of removal. WHO: Anyone who wants to help! Attorneys, legal staff, administrative staff, law students, and community members at large are all welcome to pitch in. For individuals who wish to volunteer with the application process, there will be a 2-hour training on Tuesday, September 18, 2018 from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. at Stoel Rives LLP, 760 SW 9th Avenue, Suite 3000, Portland. WHAT: Trained volunteers will help immigrant and refugee community members with applications for naturalization. Other volunteers are needed to help with organization, directing applicants to interpreters/volunteers assisting with applications, and food service, setup, and cleanup.
WHEN: Saturday, September 22, 2018 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. There are two shifts, (1) morning 9 a.m. to Noon, and (2) Noon – 3 p.m. You can also volunteer all day!

ACS Oregon: Protecting Immigrant Detainees’ Access to Counsel: An Update on Innovation Law Lab v. Nielsen
Please join the Oregon Lawyer Chapter of the American Constitution Society for a discussion on the ongoing litigation regarding the right of immigrant detainees being held at the Sheridan Federal Correctional Institution to access legal counsel.

Nadia Dahab, Attorney, Stoll BerneMs. Dahab currently serves as counsel for one of the individual detainees as well as the Innovation Law Lab. She will discuss the claims asserted by plaintiffs-petitioners and the temporary restraining order issued by Judge Michael Simon.

Join Americans around the country in saying loud and clear that children belong with their parents, and #FamiliesBelongTogether. Bring protest signs, bring your family and friends, and wear WHITE to show solidarity. 10 a.m. – 11 a.m.
Attend an “Activism Fair” designed with kids and adults in mind: crafts (possibilities are liberty crowns & monarch butterflies), write a postcard to new immigrant children to welcome them to America, a sidewalk chalk art project, voter registration, informational tables, a pledge card drive against IP 22, and more.
11 a.m. Rally begins. Speakers will include Kayse Jama of Unite Oregon, Josielyn Kremm, a USMC veteran & mom whose parents came to the U.S. as undocumented immigrants, and more. 12 noon.
After speeches, the Oregon Jewish Museum will be open and people can (with admission) view exhibits such as Discrimination & Resistance: An Oregon Primary. 5 blocks away is the Oregon Nikkei Legacy Center.
OWLS Member May Low, Chief of Staff at Catholic Charities shared this event with us which will be held on Thursday, June 27 at noon. This one hour Facebook Live event hosts a discussion on new, existing, and past border policies & how they affect children crossing the border.
